What causes diabetes

What causes diabetes ?

Overview

Despite the vast majority of citizens who suffer from diabetes, it is a serious illness that should not be taken lightly. There are two main types of diabetes: type one and type two. Insulin is usually produced in the body naturally, and it is necessary in order for cells to absorb glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream. If they are unable to absorb sugar, they use fats as a source of energy, which is much less efficient and in the long run very unhealthy. If your body lacks the ability to absorb sugar (glucose) from the bloodstream, it can be very detrimental to your health over the long-term.

About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes makes up about 10% of all diagnosed cases. Having type 1 diabetes means your body cannot produce insulin at all and you will need to frequently test yourself throughout the day and take an outside source of insulin (such as shots).

About Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is much more common and makes up 90% of the cases of diabetes. A person with type 2 diabetes means their body cannot produce enough insulin, leaving a lot of glucose unprocessed within the bloodstream, resulting in a high blood sugar.

The Importance of Care

Proper levels of both insulin and glucose are necessary for your body to do many things, and it goes far beyond simply being diagnosed with diabetes. Think of your body as an assembly line: if one person is too slow or doesn’t do their job right, they mess up the entire process. Your body needs and uses every protein and hormone it has in order to keep the process going flawlessly. If you believe you may have diabetes, it’s important you receive a proper diagnosis and learn how to care for your body properly and prevent more serious issues down the road.

Symptoms

Due to the seriousness of your insulin levels being off which causes high blood sugar and unnecessary absorption of fat, your body will show a lot of symptoms. This is good in that you will be alerted that sometime is wrong and needs to be addressed.

If you experience any of the following, it’s crucial for your health that you address the possibility of diabetes:

  • Blurry vision or other vision related problems. If you have trouble focusing on things with your eyes or it looks as though you have water in your eyes when you don’t (blurred vision), you could have diabetes.
  • If you smell acetone when there is no apparent source of it, then you should discuss the possibility of diabetes with your doctor as soon as you can.
  • Diabetes can cause a lot of digestion issues, so if you experience nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, see your doctor.
  • If you seem to be losing weight for no reason, don’t consider yourself “lucky!” This seemingly out-of-the-blue weightless can be caused by many health issues, including diabetes. A change in weight doesn’t happen for no reason and should be addressed whether you think you have diabetes or not.
  • Finally, if you have trouble breathing or experience hyper-ventilation, consult with your doctor.

You do not have to necessarily experience all of these symptoms if you have diabetes, in fact, most cases only cause one or two of the above symptoms to occur. All of our bodies react differently, but it’s essential for your well-being that you have regular check-ups and stay alert when your body is telling you something is wrong.

Even if you don’t think you have diabetes, if you’re experiencing any of the above (especially weight loss), it’s important you address any potential health problems, as all of the above symptoms can be related to serious health risks.

Treatment

 What causes diabetes

Treatment is the key to restoring your body to a healthy state. While there is no known cure for type 1 diabetes when your body is unable to produce insulin, you can cure type 2. Those with type 1 diabetes will need to adhere to a special diet, regular exercise, and participate in frequent insulin shots in order to protect their health.

Those with type 2 diabetes will find life a bit easier, but they will also need to make sure that they eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, and start/continue being active for a few hours out of the day. Outdoor exercise is best, even if it’s just a walk around the local park, but during the winter months, indoor workouts and mild exercise at the gym are also critical to getting well.

Insulin injections aren’t typically  required for those with type 2 diabetes, and in addition to the above treatment, you will also generally have to take pills of some sort to make up for the lack of insulin in your system. Making sure that you reach and stay within a healthy weight range is also critical for your health’s success whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Risks of Going without Treatment

As mentioned previously, going without proper treatment or diagnosis of your diabetes can lead to major issues within your system. Your internal assembly line will be significantly put off if you don’t fix the missing component (insulin). Lack of treatment or poor treatment can lead to a multitude of complications, including:

  • Foot complications which can sometimes lead to amputations being necessary
  • Eye complications including glaucoma and cataracts, along with others
  • Diabetes patients have a much higher risk of developing hearing issues or completely losing their hearing altogether
  • Diabetes leads to high blood sugar, which in turn can cause heart problems such as heart disease
  • Anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues can occur if diabetes isn’t treated properly
  • Diabetes patients have an increased risk for gum disease
  • The risk of a stroke incurring also increases significantly if you don’t appropriately address your diabetes
  • Due to the general unhealthy state of your system, the healing of wounds will be much slower than normal and you will find that you’re much more susceptible to infections

Seek Treatment

With all of the risks of serious illnesses, including heart disease and stroke, it’s paramount that you seek treatment if you believe you have diabetes or any other serious health issue. Treatment is essential to ensure your own well-being and so that you can live a long, healthy, and happy life! Seek help as soon as possible; don’t put your health off. Waiting another day could result in serious complications, take your health seriously.
